It’s a common scenario. A friend or coworker gives you an USB removable device so you can put some important files on it. You plug it in, transfer the files, and return the USB device. But the device was infected with a virus and now you’re infected as well. Sigh!

Shiela USB Shield is meant to prevent such situations. It is a free security solution that offers real-time protection against infected USB removable devices. When you plug in an USB device, it automatically checks it for threats. Should it find any infected files, it will freeze them. Furthermore, it will add immunity to the infected drive (drive immunization or vaccination).

The system requirements for running Shiela USB Shield are so low that you really shouldn’t worry about them. Still, in the spirit of being thorough, here they are: Windows 2000 or newer; at least 256MB of RAM; 1GHz processor or more; .NET Framework 2.0 or newer. A very simple setup wizard will help you install Shiela USB Shield on a PC that meets these requirements.

By default, Shiela USB Shield will automatically run at startup. And while it’s running, you will see its shield icon in the system tray. Double click it to bring up the Options menu and play with several settings that govern how Shiela USB Shield works. Right click it to bring up a context menu that features options to scan drives, vaccinate drives, enable notifications, and more.

And now, a list that covers most of the features Shiela USB Shield has to offer: automatically check USB devices for threats when they’re plugged in; manually scan drives for threats; vaccinate/immunize USB devices; find hidden files and folders and unhide them; automatically run at startup; generate a log file; use a virus scanner for further scanning; automatically fix problems or show a warning; disable USB mass storage; write protect USB mass storage; set up a list of exceptions.

Shiela USB Shield free software. Not only is it absolutely free, it’s open source as well.

Shiela USB Shield runs in the background and provides real-time protection against infected USB removable devices. It’s free, it’s lightweight, it’s fast, it’s great!

Pros

The system requirements for running Shiela USB Shield are very low; a simple setup wizard will help you install Shiela USB Shield. Access the Options dialog and play with lots of settings that govern how Shiela USB Shield works. Enjoy real-time protection against infected USB removable devices, vaccinate USB devices, find hidden files and unhide them. Shiela USB Shield is free and open source software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
